Chakras are bridges between the physical and the non-physical. In humans the major Chakras are in a vertical line down the center of the body-front and back. There are minor Chakras on the hands and feet. Different traditions describe different numbers of Chakras - some 7, some 8 and even some 12. The ones we deal with in Reiki are the 7 main and the minor ones in hands and feet.

The Chakras are energy centers and it is here where energy blocks occur. Each Chakra regulates the organs and systems in the area of the body it is near.

Chakras as energy centers responsible for physical organs and systems:

CROWN (7th) - On the top of the head, slightly to the back of the highest part of the skull. Governs the pineal gland, right eye and upper brain. Spiritual Chakra.

THIRD EYE (6th) - Above and between physical eyes. Governs the forehead, pituitary gland, left eye, nose, spine, ears and lower brain. Associated with psychic perception.

THROAT (5th) - Base of Neck. Center of communication. There are often blocks here because we live in a world where speaking out is risky. Every time we do not speak our truth - blocks occur in Throat Chakra. Governs thyroid, parathyroid, upper lungs, arms and digestive tract.

HEART (4th) - Behind the breastbone or sternum. Emotions come from the heart - love, self-love. Another common area of blocks - lack of self-love. Governs heart, lungs, circulation and thymus gland.

SOLAR PLEXUS (3rd) - Below the heart and between lower ribs. This is our center of energy; food is assimilated at this center. Issues of food, digestive problems, alcoholism reside here. Governs pancreas, liver, stomach, gall-bladder and solar plexus.

SACRAL (2nd) - Belly Chakra. Few inches below navel. Governs spleen in man, uterus in women, kidneys, gonads and legs.

ROOT (1st) - Located at the genitals. Place of birth and rebirth, survival center, place of ability to draw abundance from the Universe. Governs adrenal glands, bladder, genitals and spine.

Chakras are not only energy centers but data recording centers.
